Today, at Trapper Lake I’m reflecting on a week in our nation and in Alaska that epitomizes the abuses of those in power and the entire intent and power of the Declaration of Independence…. That we are inclined to put up with abuse for too long, but that at some point, enough is enough!
I was pondering this morning what to post, feeling the obligation of an elected rep to post some sort of happy-flagwavy-fireworks-bursting type of message; but also feeling the weight of the week and that this past week was what the declaration was all about!
The realization that the president gets to flaunt his abuse of power on this day is beyond incredible. And yet, after a week of messages, I didn’t want to be drawn in to a deeper canyon of despair over our country’s situation… so you’ll see my compromise on my Rep FB page. https://www.facebook.com/61569332924741/posts/122135908220644430/?
Below is a chatgpt response to what a modern day declaration might look like…
It’s going to be a beautiful sunny day at trapper lake. I hope you are enjoying the day with your family and friends.
Thank you for all you are doing to build a better future for future generations.

A Declaration to the People of the United States of America, created with prompts by Ky the help of ChatGPT to organize the content in the form of the original declaration.
When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for a people to reaffirm their shared commitment to self-governance, justice, and the public good, a decent respect to the generations before and after us requires that we speak clearly of the threats we now face, and the values we will defend.
We hold these truths to be self-evident:
- That all people, citizen or not, are created equal,
- That they are endowed with dignity, rights, and the capacity for reason and compassion,
- That governments exist to serve the people, not corporations, and not to rule them,
- And that power derives only from the consent of the governed.
Whenever government is wielded to enrich the few, to divide the many, or to entrench control through fear, manipulation, or neglect, it becomes the right—and the responsibility—of the people to resist, to reform, and to rebuild a just and sustainable future.
This is not a call for revolution, but a renewal of the social contract.
Not a rejection of our nation, but a rededication to its founding purpose.
The history of recent months is a history of growing inequality, cynical leadership, and disregard for our democratic institutions and the well-being of future generations. We have watched as:
- Vast legislation has been passed under false pretenses, funneling wealth to the powerful while burdening working Americans and their children with unsustainable debt.
- State leaders have used constitutional tools not to uphold the rule of law but to obstruct it, undermining the duties of elected assemblies and silencing the voice of the people.
- Public education, environmental stewardship, and access to health care have been sacrificed in the name of short-term gain and ideological control.
- Truth has been treated as optional, and those who speak it have been labeled enemies.
- Our shared institutions have been eroded—judged not by their integrity but by their political convenience.
We do not accept a future where leadership divides us into winners and losers in a zero-sum game.
We do not accept that patriotism requires blind loyalty to power rather than unwavering service to the people.
We do not accept that the next generation must inherit a broken democracy, an unstable planet, and an economy that rewards profit over people.
We do solemnly commit:
- To defend the right of every person to a voice in their government.
- To preserve the dignity and security of work and public service
- To enable people to live and raise families in affordable communities
- To ensure that education uplifts, health care heals, and justice is not reserved for the privileged.
- To steward the health and resources of this Earth not for profit alone, but for posterity.
- To honor the sacrifices of those before us by securing a better future for those after.
I/We pledge to each other our shared hope, our civic courage, and our labor in the service of a democracy that includes everyone, leaves no one behind, and endures beyond us all.
Signed on behalf of all who believe in liberty, accountability, and the promise of tomorrow.
